Hey guys, quick question – have any of you ever had to say no to a decent-paying gig because your numbers told you that in roughly 60 days you’d be staring at payroll and basically have nothing left in the bank? Happened to me last month. This client wanted a pretty big project, looked juicy on paper, but when I ran the forecast I saw a scary dip coming up in February-March. Ended up turning it down even though my gut was screaming “take the money!” Felt awful but also kinda relieved. Curious if I’m the only one who’s done that.

Oh man, been there twice this year already. First time was a retainer that sounded amazing, but once I mapped everything out I realized the upfront costs would eat everything and leave me short right when taxes were due. Having a solid cash flow projection literally saved me from digging a hole I couldn’t climb out of. Now I update mine every Friday night with a beer – nerdy ritual but keeps me sleeping better. Turning stuff down hurts in the moment, yet six months later you’re always glad you did.
