Testimonial..

If the size of the audience tonight was any indicator, this one-woman play is striking a resonating chord among Fringe goers.

Although I circled My Camino as a play in which I was interested - because I am drawn to stories of spiritual journeys - I still second-guessed my choice.

Specifically, I wondered how Sue Kenney would hold my interest considering that: 1) monologues are tricky and can be boring, 2) her play is not really billed as a dramatization, but as the telling of a real event, 3) that event was, basically, her having taken a long walk [a pilgrimage.]

Despite these rational objections, I followed my "inner yearning" and went to see My Camino.

I am so glad I did. My Camino is a real gem.

Perhaps this play has the impact it does because Sue Kenney is offering her audience love. Somehow, she is so genuine, so present and so at peace that she transfers that energy to the audience. Watching her is energizing.

Also, through her journey one sees how the process of transformation can work and - perhaps - learn more about being open to it.

This is, I'm sure, why her book and this play are being greeted so enthusiastically. Sue radiates love and the power of transformation right there in front of you.

Sue engaged my sense of wonder and hope while transporting me to the Camino. I imagined walking with her. I don't want to give away anything that she says - it's best to experience the journey with her first hand - but I will say I was deeply touched by one particular anecdote and intend to incorporate something she learned on her pilgrimage into my own life.

Hearing Sue's story was a healing experience that engaged me fully.

Also, although the set and staging are simple, they are very effective. The use of sound and lighting is inspired and really breaks up the play so that it isn't just one long monologue.

Also, Sue delivers with humor. I heard more laughs during this play than I have in some others (in which a humorous line was said, but no one responded to it.) I think this is because the audience felt engaged by Sue - we were all there with her, wide awake, excited - and responded to her.

All in all a remarkable piece. Despite the great acting I've seen in other plays, if I had only been able to see one play at the Fringe - I would have chosen My Camino.
